Design for who you are

All week I have been having a tug of war with myself. The sleek and simple room I've decorated in my head pleases me immensely EXCEPT it sort of has no personality. Nothing about it really made a statement about who I am as a person. And then, I came across Harlem Toile on HGTV's Design Happens blog.

If you are a person who doesn't like toile than you probably just won't like this toile. I, on the other hand, did not know if I liked toile or not. The designer, Sheila Bridges said in an interview she searched for years looking for the toile she could identify with before deciding it hadn't been created yet.

Because I was afraid the busy pattern might not fit in with my previous decor decisions, I wandered the net looking for validation. And I found it:

Cheesy moral of the story: Be yourself. As you design the spaces you exist in connect back to the things that reflect what you live, love, and learn.
